Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz 'Meteorite' ReviewOmega Speedmaster Soyuz ApolloJuly will be the month of Omega's Speedmaster replica watches. Not simply the Moonlanding are going to be celebrated (around the 21th of July 2:56 GMT), the last Apollo mission which starts back to July 1975 is widely known. The ASTP (Apollo-Soyuz Test Project) consisted beyond several joint scientific experiments, but was - of course - mainly used to detect whether combined (manned) missions between two super powers will be possible sometime soon. Mission ASTP started on the 15th of July and returned on the 24th of July 1975.Now, I do think that my track record on blogging and talking about the Omega Speedmaster models can be something I am able to be a bit happy with, on the other hand never spent the time to document the Apollo-Soyuz special editions. This model had an inscription (engraving) within the back in both English and Russian. The dial had the blue and red Apollo - Soyuz logo at 12 o'clock. Every now and then, a well used Apollo-Soyuz Speedmaster Professional shows up and could be had for approx. 10.000 Euro. At a later date, in 1995 and 2000, Omega created another Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz special. Underneath the Speedmaster that Omega introduced in 1975, featuring the handwound Lemania based cal.861 movement:As you have seen, nothing very different from your original Moonwatch, aside from the logo plus the case back. The bracelet looks a bit like an Oyster bracelet from Rolex, but it's actually an authentic Omega bracelet through the reference of 1168.This year, Omega commemorates the 35 anniversary on the combined space mission by another Speedmaster Professional Apollo Soyuz, ref. 311.30.42.30.99.001. An 'ordinary' steel Moonwatch, but this time by having an incredible looking dial constructed from meteorite as well as a very impressive engraving in case back with the watch. My friends from Watch-Site (on-line dealer) lend me this particular Speedmaster Pro Meteorite to experiment with with and - certainly - take a little pictures of it.This Speedmaster Soyuz Apollo watch has full functionalities of the current stainless Moonwatch, with a sapphire crystal instead of the more 'authentic' Hesalite crystal. As you can see, the dial is created out of a dark coloured section of meteorite as well as the dials have this grey-ish colour. Also made out of meteorite obviously. The dial is only stunning, unfortunately the blue-ish glare on the picture above is because the anti-reflective coating.
